Providence Academy Girls Basketball Makes History with Fifth Straight State Title

The Providence Academy girls basketball team made history this season, capturing its fifth consecutive state championship with a dominant win over Duluth Marshall in the Class AA title game at Williams Arena.

With the victory, the Lions became the first program in the 50-year history of the Minnesota State High School League Girls Basketball State Tournament to win five straight championships, solidifying one of the most remarkable runs in Minnesota high school basketball.

Leading the way was senior Maddyn Greenway, who capped off her historic career with another standout performance. Greenway finished with 33 points and 13 assists in the championship game, closing her career as Minnesota’s all-time leading scorer with 5,621 points. A six-year varsity player, she led the Lions to six state title appearances and five championships, putting together one of the most decorated careers in state history.

While Greenway’s legacy headlines the story, this championship run was defined by the team’s depth and chemistry. Emma Millerbernd and Alexa Nicolai each played key roles throughout the tournament, while contributions across the roster highlighted the unselfish, team-first approach that has become a trademark of the program.

Providence Academy’s success extends far beyond a single season. Over the past six years, the Lions have compiled a 169–16 record while consistently competing against top in-state and national competition. Their five-title streak places them among the most dominant programs in Minnesota history.

More than anything, this group will be remembered for the connections built along the way. In a season filled with pressure and expectations, the Lions embraced the challenge together, finishing their journey not only as champions, but as a team defined by its culture, toughness, and lasting relationships.
